You never know whom you’re going to meet at Club
Auto Sport. It might be a former football star, businessman
and television celebrity like Herschel Walker. Or a Bay
Area notable who was half of the famous play known to 49er
fans as “The Catch”, former San Francisco 49ers
receiver, Dwight Clark.
Or you might find yourself face to face with a promising
young professional race car driver, Max Hyatt, who recently
moved into Club Auto Sport, and now works with Borelli
Motor Sports as an instructor in its driver development
program.
Racing in His Genes
That’s not a nod to Levi 501s, but rather an admission
that Max has been almost destined to be a driver from the
day he was born. Max’s father formerly raced in the
SCCA Formula Continental series, and at the age of six
weeks, Max enjoyed his first weekend with dad at the track.
We’re fairly certain Max didn’t drive, because
his feet wouldn’t reach the pedals.
Max started racing in 2003, and joined the pro racing
circuit in 2006. He already has a remarkable number of
miles behind the wheel as a professional for someone so
young.
In 2009, he finished second for PR1 Motorsports in the
Pacific F2000 competition, with the most wins (five), eight
podiums, ten top-5s, and three pole positions. EFormulaCarNews.com
ranked Max as the Pacific F2000’s top driver. In
2009, Max also raced in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series
GT, debuting a BMW M6 and qualifying 7th in his first GT
race ever. Earlier this year, Max also got his first taste
of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
“I qualified 8th in front of Joey Hand and next
to Patrick Long,” Max recalled. “I made a charge
to the front in the rain, and managed to hold the lead
for six laps — before turning the car over to one
of my teammates. Wheel bearing woes took us out of the
hunt for a win, but our team still finished the race 11th
in GT and 20th overall.”
Looking ahead, there’s a lot more racing to come
for Max, who turned 23 just a couple of months ago. He
also expects to be busy working with drivers as part of
Borelli Motor Sports’ driver development program.
