On the track, it’s pretty difficult to catch Perry Richardson, an up-and-coming 24-year-old driver and graduate of Los Gatos High School. After a youth filled with highly successful go-kart racing, Perry started his driving career behind the wheel of a Spec Racer Ford in the San Francisco Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). He placed fifth in the overall point standings and was named Rookie of the Year for 2007.

In 2008, Perry moved up to the D Sports Racer Class of the SCCA — competing on both the Regional circuit and in the SCCA Nationals. In the Regional competition, he had six Top 3 finishes including four 1st places. And at the Nationals, Perry had two 1st places (including a track record) and one 2nd place — and finished 7th in the National runoffs.
So it wasn’t surprising when Perry was one of 30 drivers (out of 4,300 applicants!) to be chosen for VW’s TDI Cup in 2009 — a prestigious competition featuring the best young drivers in America. The drivers competed in ten events on eight road courses in identical factory-prepared VW Jetta TDI’s, powered by SynDiesel B5 clean biodiesel provided by HYPERFUELS — with a $100,000 purse to the winner.
Although Perry had a bit of a challenging year — as is the case for most first-time professionals — he had one Top 10 finish and will end the season at number 16 in the overall point standings, a strong result for a rookie.
